Unsent on Messenger, deleted on Telegram or imo: what you can still read on Android

On Android you can still read an unsent Messenger message, a deleted Telegram message or a removed imo message only if its text appeared in a notification and something on your phone saved it before it disappeared. For Messenger and Instagram, a saver app can also tell you which message was unsent. For Telegram and imo you keep the saved copy, but nobody can promise it will be marked as deleted.

All of this is Android only. iPhones don’t let apps read other apps’ notifications.

Why does every app handle unsend and delete differently?

Because each app decides what its notification looks like after a message is taken back, and that is the only thing a phone app can watch.

Messenger and Instagram call it “unsend”. The message leaves the chat and a line saying the person “unsent a message” takes its place. WhatsApp calls it “Delete for everyone” and leaves “This message was deleted”. Telegram lets either person in a private chat delete messages for both sides (its FAQ explains the options), and the message usually goes without a placeholder. imo is the odd one out, because its notifications don’t always carry the real text to begin with.

So the same question, “can I see it?”, gets a different answer per app. The table below is the short version.

AppWhat its notification showsFlagged as deleted?Saved copy kept?
MessengerSender and message textYes, from “unsent a message”Yes, text only
Instagram DMsSender and message textYes, from “unsent a message”Yes, text only
WhatsApp and WhatsApp BusinessSender and message textYes; a lone deleted message only while locked or screen offYes, text only
TelegramThe text, unless previews are hiddenNot promisedYes, if the text was shown
imoSometimes no real textNot promisedOnly when the text was shown
Flagged = Message Alarm marks the saved message as deleted and lists it under Deleted messages.

Can you see an unsent message on Messenger?

Yes, if the message reached you as a notification and you were saving Messenger notifications at the time. When the sender unsends it, Messenger changes the notification to say they “unsent a message”. Message Alarm recognises that line, marks the saved copy as deleted and shows it under Deleted messages. You can read it there as it was first sent.

It will not work for a message you watched arrive with the chat open, because Messenger doesn’t notify for that. A muted conversation that never notifies is the same story. And if they sent a photo and then unsent it, you get the label, not the picture.

And unsent Instagram DMs?

Instagram works the same way as Messenger here: its “unsent a message” notification is detected, so an unsent DM is flagged and kept. That helps if you sell through Instagram and a customer sends an address or an order detail, then removes it. If DMs are how you take orders, our post on Instagram DM alerts on Android shows how to make them ring and keep likes quiet.

Can you see deleted Telegram messages?

You can keep a copy of what Telegram showed you. Whether it gets labelled as deleted is another matter.

Message Alarm saves Telegram notifications like any other app’s. When a message is deleted, what happens next depends on how Telegram updates its notification on your phone, and that is not something we can promise to detect every time. In practice that means the deleted message may not appear under Deleted messages. It is still in your saved Telegram messages, filed under the person who sent it, and you can search for it.

Previews are the other limit. Telegram lets you hide message text in notifications, and secret chats may not show it either, depending on your settings. The rule is simple: if the notification didn’t show the text, no app can save it.

How do I see imo deleted messages?

Often you can’t, and that is down to imo rather than to any app. imo can notify without the real text: you learn that a message arrived, but not what it said. A saver app sees exactly that and nothing more. When imo does put the text in the notification, Message Alarm saves it; as with Telegram, flagging it as deleted is not promised.

If you searched “delete message kivabe dekhbo” for imo, the honest answer is: only when imo’s notification showed the words, and only if saving was on before it arrived.

What is the one rule for every app?

Only what reached your notification, after Save notifications was turned on. Everything else follows from that. No app can get you:

  • photos, videos, voice notes or files (a photo is saved as “📷 Photo”)
  • messages you read with the chat open
  • muted chats that never sent a notification
  • old messages from before you set it up

WhatsApp has one extra wrinkle. When a deleted message was the only new message in that chat, WhatsApp removes the whole notification, which looks the same as you reading the chat. Message Alarm counts that as a deletion only while the phone is locked or the screen is off. The saved copy is still in your saved messages either way. The full story is in our guide to seeing deleted WhatsApp messages.

How do I start saving these messages?

  1. Install Message Alarm and allow Notification access.
  2. Turn on Save notifications, which is off by default.
  3. Pick the apps to save from: Messenger, Instagram, Telegram, imo or any other chat app.
  4. Choose how long to keep them, from 7 days to Lifetime.
  5. Turn on “Tell me when someone deletes a message” if you want an alert for flagged deletions.

From then on, every new notification from those apps is saved as text, sorted by app and person, and searchable. You can limit saving to people you name, which is worth doing if you only care about a few conversations.

If your phone closes apps in the background, saving stops while it’s closed. Message Alarm’s “Fix background issues” screen covers battery and auto-start. For how long the copies last and how this compares with the phone’s built-in log, see notification history on Android.

Is it ethical to read a message someone unsent?

We think reading it is fine. Acting on it is where you should slow down.

The message was sent to you and your phone displayed it. Saving what your own phone shows you is closer to remembering a notification than to getting into someone’s account. Nothing is pulled from Messenger’s or Telegram’s servers, and the sender is not told.

But people unsend things for reasons. A typo, a wrong chat, a message sent in anger. Quoting it back to them, or screenshotting it to a group, turns a private slip into something bigger, and that is a choice you make, not the app. On the legal side, laws differ by country and we are not lawyers. If a message matters for something serious, get proper advice rather than relying on a saved notification.

Message Alarm is mainly an app that rings a loud alarm, even on silent, when an important message arrives from a person or with a word you choose. Saved notifications and deleted messages come free and unlimited with it, along with notification history, Smart Tray, Quiet mode and the spending and bill features. The free plan’s limits apply to alarms: 2 watched apps, 3 app alarms a day and 15 a week, and 2 auto-replies a week. There are no ads, and your messages are checked on your phone and never uploaded.

Questions people ask

Can I see an unsent message on Messenger?

Yes, if it reached you as a notification while Save notifications was on in an app like Message Alarm. Messenger's "unsent a message" notification is detected, so the saved copy is marked deleted and listed under Deleted messages.

Can I see deleted Telegram messages?

You can keep a copy of the text Telegram showed in its notification, filed under the sender. Whether it is marked as deleted depends on how Telegram updates its notification, so that part is not promised. If previews were hidden, there was no text to save.

How do I see imo deleted messages?

Only when imo's notification showed the real text and saving was already on. imo can notify without the message text, and then no app can save it.

Is it legal to read deleted messages?

Laws differ by country and this is not legal advice. Saving the notifications your own phone shows you is not the same as getting into someone's account, but be careful how you use or share what you read.
