Instagram DM alerts on Android: make customer messages ring, and quiet the likes

To make customer DMs stand out on Android, switch off or turn down Instagram’s like, comment and follow notifications in the app, then give messages their own treatment: a separate sound through Android, or an alarm that rings only when a DM contains words like “price”, “order” or “COD”. The first part takes two minutes. The second is what stops a buyer’s message from sitting unread until morning.

This guide is for Android. iPhones don’t allow apps to read other apps’ notifications, so the alarm part can’t work there.

Which Instagram settings control messages and likes?

Instagram keeps separate notification controls for messages and for everything else: likes, comments, new followers, live videos and so on. Open Instagram’s settings and find Notifications. The exact names and grouping change between Instagram updates, so if you can’t spot a section, use the search box at the top of Instagram’s settings.

For a shop account, a sensible starting point looks like this:

  • Messages: on, including message requests if there is a separate switch for them.
  • Likes and comment likes: off.
  • New followers and follow requests: off, or check them once a day inside the app. You lose nothing important by not hearing each one.
  • Comments: your call. If people ask prices in the comments, keep them on.

Message requests matter more than they look. A new customer you don’t follow can land there instead of in your main inbox, and for a shop that first message is often the one asking what something costs.

Why does a customer DM get lost among the likes?

Most Instagram notifications sound alike: one short chime at notification volume. A post that does well can bring dozens of likes in an hour. Somewhere in that pile is one DM from a person who wants to buy, and it looks and sounds exactly like the rest.

Then there is silent mode. Put the phone on silent or vibrate for a meeting, a prayer or the night, and all of it goes quiet, the buyer included. Android’s notification sound simply isn’t built to be loud.

Can I give Instagram DMs a louder or different sound?

You can usually give them a different sound. Louder is harder.

Android lets apps split their notifications into categories, and each category can have its own sound. Long-press an Instagram notification and tap the settings icon, or open Settings and search for “App notifications”, then pick Instagram. If messages appear as their own category, set a distinct tone for it, one you will recognise from across the room.

That tone still plays once, at notification volume, and silent mode still mutes it. For a shop that takes orders at night, that is the gap.

How do I make customer DMs ring like an alarm?

Message Alarm is a free Android app that rings a loud alarm, even when your phone is on silent, when an important message arrives from a person or with a word you choose. Point it at Instagram and give it the words your customers use.

  1. Install Message Alarm, allow Notification access, and allow Display over other apps so the full-screen alarm card can show.
  2. Add Instagram as a watched app.
  3. Under Message contains, type the words buyers send, such as price, prices, order, available, COD or delivery.
  4. Optional: set Only during set hours to your shop hours, and Repeat to Custom days if you close on some days.
  5. Choose the tone, the alarm volume and how many times it rings (1 to 10), then send a test DM from a second account with your phone on silent.

Keywords match whole words and ignore capital letters, so “Price?” matches “price” but “prices” needs its own entry. They also work in other scripts, which helps if your customers write in Bangla, Hindi or Arabic: add “দাম” next to “price” and both will ring. Our post on keyword alerts on Android has more word lists.

When a match arrives, the screen turns on and a full-screen card shows who wrote and what they said, with Dismiss and Open buttons. If you sleep through it, a “You missed an alarm” notification stays until you look.

Now the honest part about the free plan: it allows 3 app alarms a day and 15 a week. A busy shop can get more than three “price” messages before lunch. So our advice is to skip “price” and alarm on the words that mean money is about to change hands, like “order” and “COD”. Questions can wait an hour. Buyers ready to pay shouldn’t. Matches over the limit don’t ring, and the Activity screen shows each one and why.

How do I keep DMs in the bar and hide the likes?

Smart Tray keeps only the notifications you choose in your notification bar and moves the rest to an Inbox in Message Alarm, so nothing is lost. It treats Instagram DMs as chats and likes and follows as Social, which makes the split easy: add a rule that hides the Social category (likes, follows and similar from any app), and DMs stay where they are.

If you would rather glance at the likes a few times a day than never, pick Digest instead of Hide. You get one summary notification at the times you choose, with the three newest lines. The same approach works for shopping and offer apps; see how to stop promotional notifications and the wider guide to a clean notification bar.

Smart Tray is free and off by default. It never hides Message Alarm’s own alerts, calls or alarms.

Can I see an Instagram DM after it was unsent?

Yes, if it reached you as a notification while Save notifications was on. Instagram’s “unsent a message” notification is detected, so the saved copy is marked deleted and kept under Deleted messages. Photos and videos are not saved, only the text the notification showed. The details, and the same trick for Messenger, Telegram and imo, are in what you can still read after a message is unsent.

Most shops need all three columns. Instagram’s own switches cut the noise at the source, Android’s categories give DMs a sound you can tell apart, and the alarm covers the hours when the phone is face down on silent.

One check before you rely on any of it: some phones stop background apps to save battery, which delays or drops notifications. Message Alarm’s “Fix background issues” screen helps you set battery use to Unrestricted and turn on auto-start where your phone has it. Do the same for Instagram itself if its notifications arrive late.

On the free plan, Message Alarm watches 2 apps and rings up to 3 app alarms a day and 15 a week, with 2 auto-replies a week. Smart Tray, Quiet mode, saved and deleted messages, notification history, the spending tracker, bill reminders and the smart features are free and unlimited. There are no ads. Your messages are checked on your phone and never uploaded, and the app doesn’t ask for contacts, SMS, location or files permissions.

Questions people ask

How do I get notified only for Instagram messages?

In Instagram's notification settings, keep Messages on and switch off likes, comments and follows. On Android you can also hide likes and follows with Smart Tray in Message Alarm, which treats Instagram DMs as chats and likes as Social.

Can I give Instagram DMs a louder sound?

Android can give them a different sound if Instagram lists messages as their own notification category, but it still plays once at notification volume and silent mode mutes it. Message Alarm can ring an alarm for matching DMs on the alarm stream, so it rings even on silent.

Can I see an Instagram message after it was unsent?

Yes, if it reached you as a notification while Save notifications was on in Message Alarm. Instagram's "unsent a message" is detected, so the text is kept under Deleted messages. Photos and videos are not saved.

Will it ring for every Instagram notification?

No. Message Alarm rings only for notifications that match your rules, such as the words you type under Message contains or the people you name. Likes and follows that don't match stay quiet.
