Make your phone ring on silent for certain contacts, for messages too (not just calls)

To make your phone ring on silent for certain contacts, stop using silent mode and use Do Not Disturb with starred contacts allowed. Calls from the people you star then ring normally, and on most phones their text messages (SMS) come through too, while everyone else stays quiet.

That fixes calls. It does not reliably fix WhatsApp, Telegram or Messenger, which is where most people actually hear from family and close friends. For chat messages from one person you need an app that listens for that sender and rings like an alarm. Everything below is for Android; iPhone works differently, and there is a short section on it at the end.

Why doesn’t silent mode let anyone through?

Silent and vibrate are volume settings. They turn the ringer down for everything, and there is no list of exceptions attached to them. A call from your mother and a call from a delivery company are treated the same: no sound.

Do Not Disturb is a filter. The ringer stays at its normal volume, and Android decides, sound by sound, what is allowed to play. That is why every “let certain people through” setting on Android lives inside Do Not Disturb (called Modes on newer versions) and never inside silent mode.

So the habit change is small but real. Keep the ringer up. When you want quiet, switch on Do Not Disturb instead of flicking the phone to silent.

How do I let starred contacts ring through Do Not Disturb?

These steps use the stock Android names. Google says the exact settings vary by phone, so if a name doesn’t match, use the search bar at the top of Settings.

  1. Open your Contacts app and tap the star on each person who should always get through.
  2. Open Settings, tap Modes and pick Do Not Disturb. On older Android versions, open Settings and search for “Do Not Disturb”.
  3. Open Notification filters, then People.
  4. Under Calls, choose Starred contacts. Under Messages, choose Starred contacts as well.
  5. Turn on Repeat callers if you want a second call from the same number to ring through.
  6. Turn your ringer volume up, and from now on use Do Not Disturb instead of silent when you want quiet.

Repeat callers is worth a thought. It lets anyone through if they call twice in a short time, which is what people do in a real emergency. It also lets a persistent salesperson through. Most people leave it on.

What are the settings called on Samsung, Pixel and Xiaomi?

The idea is the same everywhere; the labels move. Rather than give menu paths that change with every update, here is what to type into the Settings search bar.

  • Pixel and other phones close to stock Android: search for “Modes”. Older versions say “Do Not Disturb”.
  • Samsung Galaxy: search for “Do not disturb”. Samsung may say favourite contacts where Google says starred; starring someone in Contacts is still how you mark them.
  • Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO: search for “Do not disturb”, then look for the options about who can call or message you.

If none of these names turns up, search for “Do Not Disturb” and look for a section about people, calls or messages. Star the contacts first, in the Contacts app, so they are there to pick.

Why do WhatsApp and Telegram messages from that person stay silent?

There are three separate reasons, and any one of them is enough.

First, the Messages filter in Do Not Disturb works when Android can tie a notification to a contact on your phone. SMS apps do this well. Chat apps vary, and a WhatsApp message from someone you starred is often treated as just another app notification, so it is held back with everything else.

Second, if the phone is actually on silent or vibrate, nothing plays a sound at all. Do Not Disturb exceptions only matter when the ringer is up.

Third, even when a chat message does get through, it plays the normal notification sound once. One short chime at notification volume is easy to sleep through or miss in a noisy room.

Some phones offer a partial fix: long-press a chat’s notification, mark that conversation as a priority conversation, then allow priority conversations under People in Do Not Disturb. Where your phone has it, it works for one chat at a time. Test it with the person before you rely on it, because chat apps don’t all behave the same way.

How can chat messages from one person ring like an alarm?

Message Alarm is a free Android app that rings a loud alarm, even when your phone is on silent, when an important message arrives from a person or with a word you choose. It reads the notifications your chat apps already show and checks them on the phone. When a message matches, it plays on Android’s alarm sound, the same one your morning alarm uses, so silent and vibrate don’t stop it.

There are two ways to set it up for specific people, and the choice matters.

An app rule with “Only alarm for”

Add WhatsApp (or Telegram, Messenger, your SMS app, anything that shows notifications) as a watched app, then type the person’s name under Only alarm for. The name has to match exactly what the chat app shows, which is usually their saved contact name. WhatsApp profile names that appear with a “~” in front never match, so save the number first. In group chats the real sender counts, never the group’s name.

App rules can do more than names. You can add a word with Message contains, limit the alarm to Only during set hours (overnight windows like 10 PM to 7 AM work), and choose Repeat: Always, Once, or Custom days. The catch is the free allowance: 3 app alarms a day and 15 a week.

Family mode

Family mode is simpler and has no limit. You pick the names, and messages from those people ring like an alarm even on silent, and even when Message Alarm’s other alarms are muted. It rings 1 to 10 times (3 by default), and a Ring even on silent switch decides whether it plays sound or only vibrates when the phone is on silent.

Here is our view, and you can disagree with it: for the two or three people who must always reach you, Family mode is the better choice even if one of them is a business partner rather than a relative. It is free without a cap, it doesn’t use up your daily alarms, and it keeps working when you mute everything else. Save app rules for keywords and work hours. The full Family mode set-up is in our guide to an Emergency Bypass for Android.

Can a contact ring even when my phone is on vibrate?

With Android’s own settings, no. Vibrate is a ringer setting, so a starred contact’s call vibrates like everyone else’s. Do Not Disturb exceptions can’t raise a ringer that is turned down.

An alarm-based app gets around this because the alarm sound is separate from the ringer. Message Alarm raises the alarm volume to the level you set, turns the screen on, and plays the tone 1 to 10 times. You can add vibration or a flashing flashlight, and with Display over other apps allowed, a full-screen card shows who wrote and what they said, with Dismiss and Open buttons.

One honest limit: phone calls aren’t triggers. Message Alarm skips call notifications, so for calls you still want the starred contacts set-up above. The two together cover both.

If you also want a plain SMS from a bank or a school to ring, the same rules work on your SMS app. Our SMS alarm guide covers that. And if your goal is the reverse, a phone that stays quiet except for a short list of apps, read how to let one app through Do Not Disturb.

Does this work on iPhone?

iPhone has its own answer: Emergency Bypass, a switch set per contact for calls and texts that lets that person’s sound play even when the phone is silenced. Message Alarm is Android only. iOS doesn’t let apps read other apps’ notifications, so no app can do what it does there.

What do you get for free?

Message Alarm is free with no ads and no in-app purchases. The free plan watches 2 apps, rings up to 3 app alarms a day and 15 a week, and sends 2 auto-replies a week. Family mode, Find My Phone and the other smart features are free and unlimited, and their alarms still ring after the app alarms are used up. So are Smart Tray, Quiet mode, saved and deleted messages, history, the spending tracker and bill reminders. Your messages are checked on your phone and are never uploaded. It needs Android 7.0 or later.

Questions people ask

How do I make one contact ring on silent?

Star the contact, then turn on Do Not Disturb (Settings > Modes on newer Android) and allow calls and messages from starred contacts. Keep the ringer volume up and use Do Not Disturb instead of silent mode, because silent mode has no exceptions.

Does Do Not Disturb let WhatsApp messages through?

Not reliably. The starred contacts filter works well for calls and SMS, but chat apps vary, and a message that does get through plays one normal chime. Message Alarm can ring an alarm for WhatsApp messages from the names you choose, even on silent.

Can a contact ring even when my phone is on vibrate?

Not with Android's own settings, because vibrate turns the ringer down for everyone. Message Alarm plays on the alarm sound, which vibrate and silent don't mute, so a message from a chosen person still rings. It does not cover phone calls.

Does this work on iPhone?

iPhone has its own feature, Emergency Bypass, set per contact for calls and texts. Message Alarm is Android only, because iOS doesn't let apps read other apps' notifications.
