Emergency Bypass on Android: make family messages ring through silent
By the Message Alarm team · Updated · 7 min read
Android has no setting called Emergency Bypass. The closest built-in option is to star your family in Contacts and allow starred contacts through Do Not Disturb, which covers their calls and, on most phones, their texts. It does nothing for WhatsApp or Messenger messages on a phone that is actually set to silent.
For that you need an app that rings when a family member writes. Family mode in Message Alarm does exactly this, on Android only, and it is free. The rest of this page explains what iPhone’s feature really does, what Android can and can’t match, and how to set up a parent’s or a child’s phone so family always gets through.
What does Emergency Bypass do on iPhone?
On an iPhone, Emergency Bypass is a switch you set on one contact, separately for their ringtone and their text tone. With it on, that person’s calls or texts make a sound even when the phone is silenced or a Focus is on. It is per person, and it is set once. That’s why people miss it when they move to Android.
It is tied to the phone’s own calls and texts. Apple’s broader tool for choosing who can reach you is Focus, described in Apple’s guide to allowing notifications in a Focus.
Does Android have an Emergency Bypass equivalent?
Not one switch, but a few pieces that get part of the way. They all live in Do Not Disturb, which newer Android versions call Modes: open Settings, tap Modes, pick a mode, then Notification filters. Older phones say Do Not Disturb, and Samsung, Xiaomi and others place it differently, so search Settings for “Do not disturb” if needed.
- Starred contacts, under People. Calls and messages from people you starred come through.
- Repeat callers. A second call from the same number shortly after the first rings even if that person isn’t starred, which is often how a real emergency looks.
- Priority conversations, on phones that offer them. You mark one chat as a priority conversation from its notification, and Do Not Disturb can let priority conversations through.
The gaps are the same in every case. These exceptions only work while Do Not Disturb is on and the ringer is up; silent and vibrate have no exceptions at all. Chat apps don’t always connect a message to a starred contact. And whatever gets through plays one ordinary notification sound. For a teenager’s “can you pick me up”, a single chime at 1 AM is not enough. Our page on ringing on silent for certain contacts goes through the starred contacts set-up step by step.
What is Family mode?
Family mode makes messages from the family names you pick ring like an alarm, even when the phone is on silent or Message Alarm’s alarms are muted. It is one of the free smart features in Message Alarm, an Android app that rings a loud alarm when an important message arrives.
It reads the notifications your chat apps already show. When one comes from a name on your family list, it plays on Android’s alarm sound, which silent and vibrate don’t mute. You choose how many times it rings, from 1 to 10 (3 by default). A Ring even on silent switch decides what happens when the phone is set to silent: on, it rings out loud; off, it only vibrates.
Two details make it different from the app’s ordinary alarms. It keeps ringing for family when you have muted Message Alarm’s other alarms, so muting everything for a meeting doesn’t mute your kids. And it is free and unlimited, so it never eats into the 3 app alarms a day the free plan gives you. It does stop when watching is switched off in the app, so leave watching on.
Names are strict on purpose. The sender’s name in the chat app has to be exactly one of the names you picked. Group names never count, and senders shown with a “~” (people WhatsApp shows by their profile name because you haven’t saved them) never count either.
Can I let my family know I saw their message?
Yes. Turn on Let them know I saw it, and when you stop the alarm or open the chat, Message Alarm sends a short reply from your account in that chat app. The default is “Seen ✓, I’ll reply soon”, and you can write your own.
We think this is the most underrated part of the whole set-up. A worried parent doesn’t need a long answer; they need to know the message landed. It stops the second and third “hello??” and the call that follows. If your family would find an automatic reply odd, leave it off. It is your account sending it, so they see it as coming from you.
How does it work for elderly parents, kids at school and school groups?
Elderly parents
Plenty of people put the phone on silent for a doctor’s appointment or a prayer and leave it that way for days. Set up Family mode on their phone with your name and your siblings’ names, and your messages ring loudly whatever the switch says. Raise the number of rings if they are slow to find the phone. If they often misplace the phone, set up Find My Phone with a secret phrase on it as well, with you as a trusted sender, so you can ring it from your own phone.
Kids messaging a parent
On your own phone, add each child’s saved name. Check what the chat app shows when they write; a child saved as “Ayaan School” in Contacts must be picked exactly as “Ayaan School”. If they borrow a friend’s phone, the message comes from the friend’s name and won’t ring. Worth telling them.
School groups
A class group is where Family mode’s rules help most. The group’s name never counts, so “Class 5 Parents” buzzing all evening doesn’t ring. A message in a group rings only if the sender is one of your named family members. If you want the group itself calmer, Smart Tray’s Busy groups can keep only the messages that mention you.
Will it ring during Do Not Disturb?
Yes, when alarms are allowed in Do Not Disturb, which is the Android default. Family mode rings on the alarm sound, so the same rule applies as for your clock alarm. If you have changed Do Not Disturb to block alarms too, it is blocked as well. If you use Quiet mode in Message Alarm, alarms are locked on there, so family alarms still ring; see how Quiet mode differs from Android’s exceptions.
How do I set it up on a parent’s phone?
Allow about ten minutes, and do the test at the end with the person in the room.
- Save each family member in Contacts under a clear name, then open a chat with them and check that the chat app shows exactly that name.
- Install Message Alarm and allow Notification access when it asks.
- Open Family mode from Smart features, pick the family names, and choose the chat apps they write from.
- Set the number of rings (1 to 10; 3 is the default) and leave Ring even on silent switched on.
- Decide whether to turn on Let them know I saw it, and edit the reply if you like.
- Tap Fix background issues and set battery use to Unrestricted. On phones that have it, turn on Auto-start too.
- Lock the phone, put it on silent, and ask one family member to send a test message.
One more thing is worth doing while you hold the phone. Allow Display over other apps, so the alarm shows a full-screen card with the sender, the message, and Dismiss and Open buttons instead of a small notification.
If they are a heavy sleeper or work nights, the tips in a loud message alarm for heavy sleepers apply here too.
Emergency Bypass, starred contacts or Family mode?
| iPhone Emergency Bypass | Android starred contacts | Family mode | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone | iPhone | Android | Android 7.0 and later |
| Calls | Yes | Yes | No, calls aren’t triggers |
| Texts | Yes | Usually, in Do Not Disturb | Yes, from your SMS app |
| WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram | Built for calls and texts | Uneven; priority conversations where offered | Yes, the chat apps you choose |
| Phone set to silent | Still sounds | No sound; needs Do Not Disturb instead | Rings, or vibrates if you prefer |
| How long it sounds | One ringtone or text tone | One ringtone or chime | 1 to 10 rings |
| Tells them you saw it | No | No | Optional reply |
Calls are the one row Family mode doesn’t cover. Keep your family starred as well, and the two together handle calls and messages.
Does it cost anything?
Family mode is free and unlimited, and Message Alarm has no ads and no in-app purchases. The free plan’s limits apply only to app alarms: 2 watched apps, 3 alarms a day and 15 a week, and 2 auto-replies a week. Smart Tray, Quiet mode, the other smart features, saved and deleted messages, history, the spending tracker and bill reminders are all free and unlimited. Your messages are checked on your phone and are never uploaded.
Questions people ask
Does Android have Emergency Bypass?
Not under that name. The closest built-in options are starred contacts and repeat callers in Do Not Disturb (Modes on newer Android), which cover calls and usually texts but need Do Not Disturb on instead of silent mode.
How do I make my kids' messages ring on silent?
Turn on Family mode in Message Alarm and pick your children's names exactly as the chat app shows them. Their messages then ring like an alarm, 1 to 10 times, even when the phone is on silent. It works on Android only.
Can I let my family know I saw their message?
Yes. With Let them know I saw it on, Message Alarm sends a short reply from your account in that chat app when you stop the alarm or open the chat. The default is “Seen ✓, I'll reply soon”, and you can change it.
Will it ring during Do Not Disturb?
Yes, when alarms are allowed in Do Not Disturb, which is the Android default, because Family mode rings on the alarm sound. If you set Do Not Disturb to block alarms too, it is blocked as well.
