WhatsApp notifications not showing? Fix them on Android and iPhone, then give one person their own sound
Give one WhatsApp contact their own notification sound, then fix missing alerts on Android and iPhone, including the icon missing from the status bar.
To give one person their own WhatsApp notification sound, open the chat with them and tap their name at the top. On Android, tap Notifications and pick a new Notification tone. On iPhone with iOS 16.2 or later, tap Wallpaper & Sound > Alert tone, choose one and tap Save.
If the problem is that notifications are not showing at all, look at the phone before the app. WhatsApp's help pages say device settings override its own. We also make OLL.E, an app that can sound an alarm or call you when a person you named writes on WhatsApp. On iPhone it sees WhatsApp messages only through the PinG keyring, because iOS does not let one app read another app's notifications.
Why are WhatsApp notifications not showing?
There are two different problems here, and they have different fixes.
WhatsApp calls the first one a push notification issue. Push notifications are the alerts you get while WhatsApp is closed or in the background. If new messages only appear once you open the app, and nothing arrives while it is closed, the alert never reached you. WhatsApp says those alerts depend on your notification permission, background data and battery settings.
The second problem is quieter. The WhatsApp message notification does arrive, but with no sound, no icon at the top, or no banner. That is about how the alert is shown, and it lives in a different set of switches.
To tell them apart, lock the phone, close WhatsApp and ask someone to message you. Then look at the notification shade. Message there but silent? Second problem. Nothing at all? First.
One odd case: locked chats show "WhatsApp" instead of the contact's name in their notifications.
WhatsApp notifications not working on Android
These come from WhatsApp's Android help page. Try them in this order.
- On Android 13 and newer, apps need permission to notify you. Open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Notifications and turn on Allow notifications.
- Allow WhatsApp to run in the background. Open Settings and search for "battery" to find the optimisation setting for WhatsApp.
- Turn off Do Not Disturb, or allow WhatsApp through it. On newer Android it sits under Settings > Modes.
Then open WhatsApp > Settings > Notifications and check which Notification tone is set, and that it is one you would actually hear.
WhatsApp notification not showing in the status bar
This is the most common version of the quiet problem, and it has a tidy explanation. Google's Android help splits notifications into Alerting and Silent. Alerting ones make a sound, show on the lock screen and put the app icon in the status bar. Silent ones make no sound and do not vibrate; they only appear when you swipe down from the top of the screen. Many phones also have a setting to hide silent notifications from the status bar completely.
So if the message is in the shade but there is no green icon up top, WhatsApp's message category has been set to Silent, often by a long press on a notification months ago that nobody remembers. Open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Notifications, tap the category for messages, and set it back to Alerting. If one contact has custom notifications, WhatsApp gave that chat its own category, so check that one as well.
While you are there, open WhatsApp > Settings > Notifications and turn on Use high priority notifications. It shows previews at the top of your screen instead of only in the shade.
WhatsApp notifications not working on iPhone
The iPhone side is shorter, because WhatsApp has less to say about it. Its help page explains that notifications reach your iPhone through Apple's Push Notification Service, not from WhatsApp directly, and that WhatsApp cannot fix delivery problems from its end. A missing alert or a wrong badge count is often a weak connection.
What WhatsApp suggests: open a website to check that Wi-Fi or mobile data actually works, switch airplane mode on and off, restart the phone, and make sure WhatsApp notifications are allowed in the iPhone Settings app. Then check Focus, which can silence WhatsApp without telling you. Go to Settings > Focus, open each Focus you use and look at Apps.
If the WhatsApp notification sound is not working but the banner is fine, check the phone itself is not on silent, then open WhatsApp > Settings > Notifications, where you pick separate tones for messages, group messages and calls.
More on custom notifications for one chat
A tone of its own is the best free fix for "I can't tell my boss from the family group", and groups can have one too.
On Android, the chat's Notifications screen also lets you mute it or change how long it vibrates, and under Advanced settings you can turn on Use high priority notifications for that chat alone. Once custom notifications are on for a chat, WhatsApp adds a new notification category for it in your phone's settings. That category is the one to check if that person's alerts ever go quiet while everyone else's still work.
Why a custom tone is not enough
A custom ringtone helps only if your phone is in your hand. The message that matters most usually arrives when it isn't.
Think about when a VIP client actually writes "are you around? the site is down". You're asleep with Do Not Disturb on. The custom tone plays once, for under a second, or it doesn't play at all because the phone was told to be quiet. Same for the school message about your kid at 2pm on a Tuesday, while you sit in a meeting with the ringer off.
You can soften this. Android's Modes and iPhone's Focus both let chosen people through (Settings > Modes > a mode > Notification filters > People on newer Android, Settings > Focus > a Focus > People on iPhone). That is worth doing today. But a person you let through still gets the same short WhatsApp alert, once, and if you miss it there is no second try.
An alarm or a phone call when a named person writes
OLL.E watches your WhatsApp notifications: on Android directly, on iPhone through PinG, a Bluetooth keyring that relays your phone's notifications and rings on its own speaker. You tell it who matters the way you would tell a friend, like "Alarm me when a VIP client messages on WhatsApp" or "Call me if my kid's school writes", and when one of those notifications comes in it sounds an alarm or calls your phone. Everyone else waits quietly in the Shortlist. There is no WhatsApp login. It reads only the notification, and stores no message content.
On Android it can also auto-reply to those same people, with text you approved or a short reply that fits what they wrote. We covered how that works, and how it compares with the Business app, in our WhatsApp auto-reply guide; the feature itself is on the auto-reply page. On iPhone, replies come back as drafts you tap to send.
Fix the settings above first. They are free, and they solve most missing WhatsApp alerts. If your trouble is the other kind, where the alert worked fine and you just weren't near the phone, that's what OLL.E is for: name the few people who should reach you, and they get an alarm or a call while the rest of WhatsApp stays as quiet as you like. On iPhone it needs the PinG keyring, which you buy on its own. Pro costs $19.99 a month, and the free plan has room for your most important contacts.
Questions people ask
How do I change the WhatsApp notification sound for one contact?
Open the chat and tap the person's name at the top. On Android tap Notifications and change the Notification tone; on iPhone with iOS 16.2 or later tap Wallpaper & Sound > Alert tone, pick one and tap Save. Group chats can have their own tone the same way.
Why are WhatsApp notifications not showing?
Usually because a phone setting is blocking them, and WhatsApp says device settings override its own. On Android check the notification permission, Do Not Disturb and whether WhatsApp may run in the background; on iPhone check Focus and your connection, since alerts come through Apple's push service. If the message is in the shade but there is no status bar icon, WhatsApp's message category has been set to Silent.
What is high priority notification in WhatsApp?
It is an Android setting that shows message previews at the top of your screen instead of only in the notification shade. Turn it on in WhatsApp > Settings > Notifications, or for one chat under that chat's Notifications > Advanced settings. It does not make the alert louder or get past Do Not Disturb.
Why is my WhatsApp notification sound not working?
Most often the phone is on silent or in Do Not Disturb, or on Android WhatsApp's notification category has been set to Silent in the phone's settings. Also check WhatsApp > Settings > Notifications to see which tone is set, and check any custom tone set on that one chat.
