Auto-reply to clients on WhatsApp from a personal account: three ways, and what each one misses
WhatsApp only auto-replies from the Business app. Android responder apps answer through the notification; on iPhone no app can. What each one misses, and why.
From a personal WhatsApp account, the only auto-reply WhatsApp itself offers is to move your number to the WhatsApp Business app and switch on Away messages. On Android you can skip that and use an app that reads the incoming notification and answers through it; on iPhone no app can do that, so you are left with a Shortcut you fire yourself, or the Business app.
Each one works differently, and how it works decides what it cannot do. We built a fourth, OLL.E, which answers only the clients who are waiting on you (on iPhone it needs the PinG keyring, and replies are drafts you confirm); it gets one section near the end.
Can I automate messages in WhatsApp?
Officially, in two places. The free WhatsApp Business app has Away messages, Greeting messages and Quick replies. The WhatsApp Business Platform (what people mean by "the API") is a server-side connection Meta sells to companies: messages go through Meta's cloud rather than your phone, it needs its own number and a verified Meta business account, and it is paid per message. Not for a personal account.
Everything else is a workaround built on your phone's notifications.
How do I add an out of office message in WhatsApp?
Install WhatsApp Business, register with the same number, and your chats move across. The personal app stops working for that number, so this is a switch, not an add-on.
Under the hood an Away message is a feature of the Business app itself: when a chat comes in, the app checks your schedule and recipient list and sends the text from your phone. The phone has to be on and online, and nothing is sent while you have that chat open.
- In WhatsApp Business, open the app settings, find Business tools and tap Away message. Where Business tools sits differs a little between Android and iPhone.
- Turn on Send away message and write the text.
- Pick a schedule: Always send, Custom schedule, or Outside of business hours (which uses the hours on your business profile).
- Pick recipients: Everyone, Everyone not in address book, Everyone except…, or Only send to…
- Set up Quick replies under the same Business tools menu: type / in any chat and a saved answer drops in. Those are manual, not automatic.
What it misses: everyone on the list gets the same text. Your mum, the plumber and the client whose invoice is overdue all read "Thanks for your message, I'm away". "Only send to" narrows it to a contact list, but the list is who they are, not what they wrote. Free, and the only method WhatsApp will never object to.
How to set auto reply in WhatsApp without a Business account (Android)
WhatsAuto and AutoResponder for WA do it on a normal personal account, and the trick is simple once you see it. Android lets an app with Notification access read every notification as it arrives, and WhatsApp's notifications carry a Reply action, the same one you use from the lock screen. The responder app reads the sender and the text out of the notification and pushes its reply into that action, so WhatsApp sends it as if you had typed it.
If no notification appears, nothing happens. A muted chat, a chat you have open on screen, a phone that killed the app overnight to save battery: no notification, no reply. The app sees only the notification text, not the thread, so matching is by contact name and keyword. And iOS has no equivalent permission, so these apps are Android only.
Setup is roughly the same in all of them. Install, open the app, let it take you to the Notification access screen (or open Settings and search for Notification access) and switch it on, then write rules: a contact or group, a trigger (any message, or a keyword like "files" or "invoice"), and the reply text. Add a cooldown so one person does not get the same auto-reply nine times in an hour, test it by messaging yourself from a second phone or a friend's, and check that the app's own little notification stays pinned in the shade, because the moment Android stops it running in the background your rules stop too, usually overnight, which is exactly when you wanted them. Both apps are free with ads, with paid tiers for more rules.
Can you auto-reply on WhatsApp on iPhone?
No app can.
iOS does not let one app read another app's notifications in the background, and there is no Reply action an app could press on your behalf. An App Store listing that promises it is a Business app tutorial in disguise, or a shortcut.
The Shortcuts route is real but manual. You can build a shortcut that opens WhatsApp with a prewritten message to a chosen contact and put it in a Focus or on the Home Screen, but Shortcuts cannot see WhatsApp's notifications, so you run it yourself. Test whether it sends on its own or waits for your tap before you count on it.
Which WhatsApp auto-reply method should you use?

| Android responder apps (WhatsAuto, AutoResponder for WA) | Yes | Yes | No | Yes, by contact or keyword | No, keywords only | No | Free with ads; paid tiers for more rules |

What is the best auto-reply message for WhatsApp?
One that sounds like you and says when you will actually answer. Nobody has ever been reassured by "We value your message and will respond at the earliest opportunity". Five you can paste in and edit; keep them under three lines, the other person is reading on a lock screen.
- Got this. I'm in meetings until 4 and I'll answer properly then. If it can't wait, call me.
- Saw your message, thanks. I'm off today and back tomorrow at 9. You're first on the list.
- On it. The files are due to you Thursday by noon, as agreed, and I'll message the minute they're up.
- It's past 10pm here so I'll pick this up first thing. If something is actually broken right now, ring me.
- Away until Monday. Not ignoring you, just not near the laptop. Reply coming Monday morning.
A short message with a time in it reads as busy, not automated.
Replying to everyone automatically is worse than replying to no one. A friend gets noise. A stranger learns your number is live. The client who asked a specific question and got "I'm away" can tell, and it stings. The useful version answers only the people who are waiting on you, and says something that fits what they asked.
A fourth way: reply only to the clients who are waiting on you
On Android OLL.E uses the same notification access as the responder apps, but matches on meaning, not a keyword. You write the watch the way you would say it out loud: "a client asking when the files are ready", "a VIP customer", "anyone from the Henderson project chasing an invoice". When a WhatsApp notification fits, it can send a reply you approved in advance or a short one that fits the thread, and for the ones that matter it can sound an alarm or place a real phone call. Everything else goes to a quiet Shortlist that never buzzes.
On iPhone the same iOS rule applies to us as to everyone else. PinG is a Bluetooth keyring that relays your phone's notifications to OLL.E and rings on its own speaker. With PinG you get the watch and the alarm; replies come back as drafts, one tap to send. Gmail, Upwork and Calendar watches need no keyring on iPhone.
If you would rather not stitch the Android route together yourself, OLL.E (our app) is the fourth way. It watches your WhatsApp notifications, picks out the clients who are waiting on you, replies with text you approved or a short reply that fits, and can call or alarm you for the ones that matter. It does not reply to everyone, and never replies unless you attach a reply action. It costs nothing to try: four watches on the free plan, no card; Pro is $19.99 a month with a 7-day trial. On iPhone, WhatsApp watching needs the PinG keyring, an add-on you buy once, and replies are drafts you confirm.
Questions people ask
How do I add an out of office message in WhatsApp?
Only the WhatsApp Business app has one: open Business tools, tap Away message, turn it on, write the text, then pick a schedule and who receives it. The personal app has no away message, so you would have to move your number to WhatsApp Business first. It sends the same text to everyone on the list, whatever they wrote.
Can I automate messages in WhatsApp?
Officially only through the WhatsApp Business app (Away messages, Greeting messages, Quick replies) or the paid WhatsApp Business Platform that companies connect to their own servers. On a personal Android account, apps with Notification access can read an incoming message and reply through the notification's Reply action. On iPhone no app can do that in the background.
How do I set auto reply in WhatsApp without a Business account?
On Android, install a responder app such as WhatsAuto or AutoResponder for WA, grant it Notification access, and write a rule: which contact, which trigger, which reply. It works because WhatsApp's notification carries a Reply action the app can fill in. On iPhone there is no equivalent; your options are a Shortcut you trigger yourself, the Business app, or OLL.E with the PinG keyring, where replies are drafts you confirm.
What is the best message for an auto-reply on WhatsApp for businesses?
A short one that sounds like you and names the time you will actually answer, such as "Got this. I'm in meetings until 4 and I'll reply properly then. If it can't wait, call me." Skip "we value your message" and anything longer than three lines. Better still, send it only to the people who are waiting on you, not to every chat.
