Mute a busy group chat but still get your @mentions

To mute a group chat except for mentions on Android, keep the group unmuted in the chat app and let a filter decide what reaches your tray. With Busy groups (mentions only) in Smart Tray, part of Message Alarm, only @mentions, replies to you and messages that name you stay in the notification bar; every other group message moves to an Inbox you can read later. It works on WhatsApp groups too, once you turn it on.

This is an Android-only set-up. iPhones don’t let apps read other apps’ notifications.

What do WhatsApp and Telegram offer on their own?

Both let you mute a chat, for a set time or for good. Muting is the right tool for a group you never need to hear from. It is a blunt one for a group where, now and then, someone actually needs you: the class teacher asking a question, a colleague tagging you on a deadline.

What a muted group does when someone mentions you depends on the app and its version, and it has changed over the years. Don’t trust a blog post on it, this one included. Test it: mute the group, ask a friend in it to @mention you, and see what your phone does. Telegram has more notification options than most chat apps; its FAQ is the place to start.

Android adds one more layer. On recent versions, chat notifications are treated as conversations, and long-pressing one lets you make that conversation silent. A silent group still fills the tray, though. It just does so quietly.

Here is the catch that matters for the rest of this post. If the chat app is told not to notify you, no notification is posted, and nothing else on the phone can see the message either. Any filter, including Smart Tray, can only work with notifications that arrive. So if you want mentions picked out of a busy group, the group must stay unmuted in the chat app.

How does Busy groups keep only @mentions and replies?

Busy groups, mentions only, keeps a group’s messages out of your notification bar unless they are meant for you. It is off by default and applies to group chats from chat apps, WhatsApp groups included.

A group message stays in the tray when it:

  • @mentions you, or uses a group-wide tag such as @all or @everyone;
  • replies to one of your messages, which chat apps usually show as “replied to you”;
  • names you, using the names you add to Your names (a nickname counts if you add it).

Everything else goes to the Inbox, marked “Busy group · not @you”. Nothing is deleted, and the chat app still has every message.

Setting it up takes a minute:

  1. In WhatsApp or Telegram, leave the group unmuted, so its messages still reach your phone as notifications.
  2. Open Message Alarm, tap Smart Tray and turn it on, allowing Notification access if Android asks.
  3. Turn on “Busy groups, mentions only”.
  4. Add the names people use for you in groups to Your names, such as a nickname or a short form.
  5. For any group you want in full, such as family, open it in the Inbox and tap “Keep all”.

Your names is the step people skip, and it is the one that catches “Rafi, can you bring the projector?” when nobody typed an @. Add the short form your friends use, and the name your colleagues use, if they differ.

Who always gets through a muted group?

Mentions aren’t the only exception. A few things are always kept, whatever group they come from.

VIP people are kept by name. Inside a group, the person who wrote the message counts, never the group’s name, so if your manager is a VIP, their messages in the office group stay in the tray even without an @. The name has to match how it shows on your phone. WhatsApp’s “~Name” profile names, from people not in your contacts, never match.

Urgent words are kept too, and you can edit that list. Then there are your own Keep rules. Because the most specific rule wins (a person, then a word, then a group, then a category, then the app), a Keep rule for a word like “exam” keeps that message in the tray even in a group set to mentions only.

One breakthrough doesn’t apply here: the same person writing 3 times in 5 minutes counts only in one-to-one chats. A group in full flow can’t trigger it, which is the point.

Will I see the rest of the group’s messages later?

Yes, in two places. The chat app itself is unchanged: open the group and every message is there, as unread as before. Smart Tray only takes the notification away, never the message.

Message Alarm’s Inbox keeps the hidden notifications as well, grouped by app and chat with the newest lines on top, and you can search them. That is handy for “what time did they say the meeting was?” without scrolling a 300-message group. On each group you get the choices that matter: Keep all, Only @mentions, or Never show, each with Undo.

If you’d rather read a group in one go, give it a Digest rule instead. Its messages then arrive as part of a summary at 9 AM, 1 PM and 7 PM, or your own times. The notification digest guide explains the difference.

How should you set up each kind of group?

Not every group deserves the same treatment. We’d argue the family group is the one most people mute and shouldn’t; it is noisy, but it is also where bad news arrives first.

Example set-ups. Names and words are yours to choose; keywords match whole words and ignore capital letters.

Does it work for Telegram, Messenger and other chat apps?

Yes, for group chats from chat apps such as Telegram, Messenger and WhatsApp Business as well as WhatsApp, as long as the app shows group messages as notifications. Smart Tray reads the notification, not the app, so it doesn’t need anything from the chat app beyond that.

Two limits are worth knowing. A mention only counts if the notification shows it, so a group that the chat app bundles into “12 new messages” without the text gives Smart Tray little to work with. And if Android stops Message Alarm in the background to save battery, nothing is sorted until it runs again; Smart Tray warns you on Home when that happened for 30 minutes or more.

What about groups at night?

Busy groups decides what stays in the tray. It doesn’t decide what makes a sound. For that, Quiet mode (it needs Smart Tray on) makes the phone really silent on a schedule such as Sleep, 11 PM to 7 AM, and still alerts chats with people, @mentions, your Keep rules, VIP people and urgent words. A group message that doesn’t mention you stays silent, so the group’s chatter can’t wake you.

If one word in a group should do more than stay in the tray, and actually ring like an alarm, that is a keyword alert. People who sleep through normal notifications should read the guide to a loud message alarm for heavy sleepers. And for the rest of the tray, beyond groups, start with cleaning up the notification bar.

Is Busy groups free?

Yes. Message Alarm is a free Android app that rings a loud alarm, even when your phone is on silent, when an important message arrives from a person or with a word you choose. Smart Tray, Busy groups and Quiet mode are free and unlimited, along with saved and deleted messages, notification history, spending, bills and the smart features. The free limits apply to alarms only: 2 watched apps, 3 app alarms a day and 15 a week, and 2 auto-replies a week. No ads, and your messages are checked on your phone and never uploaded.

Questions people ask

Can I mute a WhatsApp group but get mentions?

Yes, on Android. Leave the group unmuted in WhatsApp and turn on Busy groups (mentions only) in Message Alarm's Smart Tray: @mentions, replies to you and messages naming you stay in the tray, and the rest moves to the Inbox.

How do I stop group chats from buzzing all day?

Turn on Busy groups so only messages meant for you stay in the tray, and use Quiet mode on a schedule so group messages that don't mention you stay silent. Choose Keep all for groups you want in full, such as family.

Will I see the messages later?

Yes. Every message is still in the chat app, and Smart Tray's Inbox keeps the hidden notifications, grouped by chat and searchable. Smart Tray only takes the notification away, never the message.

Does it work for Telegram?

Yes, for Telegram groups and other chat apps' groups, as long as the app shows group messages as notifications. A group muted inside the chat app sends no notifications, so nothing can pick its mentions out.
