A payment soundbox on your phone: free voice alerts for bKash, UPI and other payment apps
By the Message Alarm team · Updated · 6 min read
Your Android phone can do a soundbox's job. The Payment Soundbox in Message Alarm says each payment you receive out loud, such as "500 taka received on bKash", using the phone's own voice. It works with the payment apps you pick and with payment SMS from banks and wallets, it is free, and there is no box to rent or buy.
One warning belongs at the top rather than the bottom: a voice alert is not proof of payment. More on that below, because it is the part shop owners get burned by.
What does a payment soundbox do?
A payment soundbox is a small speaker at the counter that announces every payment received, so neither you nor the customer has to look at a screen. Payment providers rent them out or sell them to merchants, and the box usually speaks for payments to that provider's QR code.
The appeal is obvious in a busy shop. The customer scans, the box says the amount, you hand over the goods, and the queue keeps moving. Nobody waits while you wake a phone and scroll.
How does Payment Soundbox speak the amount from your phone?
When a payment lands, your payment app shows a notification. Message Alarm, which has Notification access, reads it on the phone, checks that it is money coming in, and speaks the amount and the app with Android's text-to-speech. Nothing is uploaded for this. The phone does all of it.
It only speaks money you receive. Money you send, cash out, one-time codes, offers and balance messages are all ignored, so the counter stays quiet when you pay a supplier or the wallet sends a promotion.
Bank and wallet payment SMS count too, which helps when the data connection drops: an SMS arrives without mobile data, while an app notification needs the phone online. SMS from ordinary phone numbers never count, however much they look like a payment.
Which payment apps does it work with?
You choose which apps it listens to. The supported list is long, and it includes many banks as well as these:
- Bangladesh: bKash, bKash Merchant, Nagad, Rocket, Upay, CellFin and Pathao Pay.
- India: Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay, BHIM, MobiKwik, CRED, YONO SBI, and the HDFC, iMobile, Axis and Kotak apps.
- Other mobile money and wallets: M-PESA, MoMo, OPay, PalmPay, DANA, OVO, GoPay, GCash, Maya, JazzCash and easypaisa.
- International: PayPal, Wise, Revolut, Payoneer, Venmo, Cash App, Square and Stripe.
Pick only the apps customers actually pay you through. If your personal Google Pay is on the same phone and you don't want the counter to hear about money from your cousin, leave it off the list.
How do I set it up for a shop counter?
Two settings matter most. Loud plays the announcement so it is heard even when the phone is on silent. Normal uses the media volume, which suits a quiet office or a phone you also use for music. Then there is Say it twice, which repeats each announcement. In a market with traffic outside, turn it on; the second time is the one people actually hear.
- Install Message Alarm from Google Play on the phone that stays at the counter, and allow Notification access.
- Turn on Payment Soundbox in Message Alarm.
- Choose the payment apps you take money on, for example bKash Merchant, Nagad or PhonePe.
- Pick Loud if the phone is often on silent, or Normal to use the media volume, and turn on Say it twice if the shop is noisy.
- Open Fix background issues and set battery use to Unrestricted.
- Ask someone to send you a small payment and listen for the amount.
On a phone that is also full of shopping-app offers, add Smart Tray. A rule to keep bKash plus a rule to hide promotions keeps every bKash payment in the notification bar while a bKash offer goes to the Inbox, because the most specific rule wins. The guide to stopping promotional notifications walks through it.
Why wasn't a payment announced?
Start with the simple causes. The payment app may not be on your chosen list, or its notifications may be switched off in Android, in which case there was nothing to hear. On Normal, the media volume might be at zero after someone watched a video on the phone; Loud avoids that.
Then check where the money went. A customer who paid your personal number on a different phone triggered that phone, not the counter one. A message from an ordinary phone number is ignored by design, even if it claims a payment. And if Android closed Message Alarm to save battery, nothing is spoken until it runs again, which is why the battery step above is in the list at all.
Can someone fake a payment alert?
Yes, and this is the most important paragraph on the page. A voice alert is not proof of payment. Before you hand over goods, check the payment app or your balance, every time the amount is large enough to hurt.
Fake-payment tricks are an old problem for anyone who sells by mobile money or UPI. A customer shows a screenshot of a payment that never happened, plays a recorded announcement from their own phone, or sends a text dressed up as a bank message. Message Alarm ignores payment-style SMS from ordinary phone numbers, which removes the crudest version. It can't make the other tricks impossible, and no voice alert can, whether it comes from a phone or a box.
A habit that works: let the announcement speed up small sales, and look at the app for anything bigger. You decide where that line is.
Hardware soundbox or a phone app: which should you use?
| Point | Hardware soundbox | Payment Sound Box: UPI Alert | Message Alarm Payment Soundbox |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you get it | Rented or bought from your payment provider | Free app on Google Play | Free app on Google Play |
| Which payments it announces | Usually that provider's | See listing | The payment apps you choose, plus bank and wallet payment SMS |
| Ads | None | Yes | No |
| Where it speaks | At the counter, on its own | On the phone | On the phone it is installed on |
| Downloads on Google Play | Not an app | 1K+ | 100K+ |
Our opinion: for a one-person stall, the phone already in your pocket is enough, and paying for a box is money spent on a speaker. The case for a dedicated box starts when the owner walks off with the phone and someone else minds the counter. A box stays put. An app only speaks where its phone is. If that describes your shop, use the box, or keep an old Android phone (Android 7 or later) plugged in at the counter, with your merchant app signed in, as a soundbox of your own.
The other app in the table, Payment Sound Box: UPI Alert, is aimed at UPI; check its listing for what it supports.
What else helps a small shop?
The same payment messages can add up your takings and spending in the spending tracker, and there is a version of that guide for bKash and Nagad. And when you are the one waiting for stock or lunch, the rider arrival alarm rings when the delivery app says the rider is here, so nobody is left waiting outside.
Message Alarm is a free Android app that rings a loud alarm, even when your phone is on silent, when an important message arrives from a person or with a word you choose. Payment Soundbox is one of its free smart features, unlimited, and it keeps speaking even after the day's alarms are used up. Smart Tray, Quiet mode, saved and deleted messages, history, spending and bills are free and unlimited as well. The free plan only limits alarms: 2 watched apps, 3 app alarms a day and 15 a week, and 2 auto-replies a week. No ads.
Questions people ask
Can my phone announce payments like a soundbox?
Yes, on Android. Message Alarm's Payment Soundbox reads payment notifications and bank or wallet payment SMS and says the amount you received out loud with the phone's own voice. It only speaks money coming in, never money you send.
Does it work with PhonePe, Google Pay and bKash?
Yes. PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM, bKash, bKash Merchant, Nagad, Rocket and many other payment apps and banks are supported, and you choose which ones it listens to.
Can someone fake a payment alert?
A voice alert is not proof of payment, so check the payment app or your balance before handing over goods. Message Alarm ignores payment-style SMS from ordinary phone numbers, but no announcement, from a phone or a box, can rule out every trick.
Is it free?
Yes. Payment Soundbox is one of Message Alarm's free smart features, with no limit and no ads, and there is nothing to rent or buy. It keeps speaking even after the free daily alarms are used up.
