Discord notifications not working, the wrong sound, or too many: the fixes, and how to get called for one channel

Discord notifications fail mostly from a mute, Do Not Disturb or being active on desktop. Fix phone and desktop, change the sound, alert on one channel only.

A Discord notification that never showed up was usually never sent. Mostly that's a server or channel you muted weeks ago and forgot about. Do Not Disturb does it too, and so does being active on your computer, which makes Discord hold back what it would push to your phone. On iPhone there is one more limit: apps like OLL.E can't read another app's notifications in the background, so watching Discord from an iPhone takes the PinG keyring.

I read Discord the way most people do, which is mostly not at all, and then in a panic.

Why are my Discord notifications not working on my phone?

Usually because Discord never sent one, so your phone had nothing to show. Discord's help pages split the job in two. The settings inside Discord decide whether a notification is sent at all. Your phone's settings decide how it shows up, whether as a banner or with a sound. Check them in this order.

Start with the server. Open its Notification Settings and make sure it isn't muted or set to Nothing, then look at the channel too, because a channel can be muted on its own. Mute silences everything, @mentions included. Next, your Discord status. Do Not Disturb follows you across desktop and mobile, so switching it on at your desk quiets your phone as well, and it is easy to forget you did. Then check if you're at your computer. Discord holds phone notifications while you're active on desktop; check the notification settings on your computer if your phone only lights up after you walk away. If you're looking at the chat on your computer, your phone may stay quiet too.

Only after that is it the phone. On Android, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications > Discord and check it's allowed. On iPhone, open Settings > Notifications > Discord. While you're there, look for a Focus or Do Not Disturb mode on the phone itself: on iPhone that's Settings > Focus, and on Android, open Settings and search for "Modes" or "Do Not Disturb".

One more catches people in big communities. Very large servers may not push every message to your phone, only the ones that mention you or your role. Plenty of signal servers are huge, which is why "All Messages" on a big server can look broken on a phone when Discord is doing what it was built to do.

Why are Discord notifications not working on desktop?

On a computer, the usual reason is that the pop-ups were switched off in Discord or hidden by the operating system. In Discord, open User Settings > Notifications and check Enable Desktop Notifications. With it off, you only see notifications inside Discord itself. That toggle covers pop-ups and nothing else, so sounds can keep playing while the pop-ups stay hidden, which confuses a lot of people.

Then the system. Windows Focus Assist and macOS Focus modes can hide every app's pop-ups without telling you. Discord's own troubleshooting list points there, after a muted server or channel and Do Not Disturb.

How do I change the Discord notification sound?

On desktop and in the browser, open User Settings > Notifications and scroll to Sounds. Every sound has its own toggle there, from messages and mentions to calls and voice channel joins. The Event Sound Pack menu swaps in Discord's seasonal packs, and Discord Default puts the normal ones back. Discord says those packs are desktop and browser only. I couldn't find anything in Discord's help pages about using your own sound file, so I wouldn't count on it.

On a phone, the sound belongs to the phone, not to Discord. Look for Discord in the phone's own notification settings and see what it offers there.

If the Discord notification sound is not working but the pop-ups arrive, look at the Sounds list first. The Message sound may simply be off. After that, check the phone itself for silent mode or a Focus. Do Not Disturb on your Discord status silences sounds too, on every device you're signed in on.

How do I get notified for one Discord channel only?

Set the whole server to Only @mentions, then give that one channel its own setting. Open the server's menu (click the server name, or right-click its icon) and choose Notification Settings. Pick Only @mentions. Leave the toggles that suppress @everyone, @here and role mentions alone for now. Then hover the channel, click the bell, open Notification Settings and choose All Messages. A channel offers the same levels as a server, plus Use Server Default.

Only @mentions is the right default for almost every server you are in. It keeps the server quiet and still lets the people running it reach you. All Messages on a busy server usually ends with you muting it.

The one channel that matters deserves more than a mention, though. For a trader that's #signals. A community manager might care about #mod-alerts or #reports. A freelancer whose client runs the project in Discord usually wants the client's channel and nothing else. But look at what All Messages on #signals gives you. The entry rings. So does the chart, the "TP1 hit", the screenshot of someone's profit and the meme, all with the same sound. And on a very large server the override may not reach your phone at all, because only mentions get pushed. There, the thing that reaches your pocket is the mod's role ping, so don't switch on Suppress All Role @mentions for that server.

Can Discord call me when someone posts?

Discord has no setting that turns a channel message into a phone call. That part is what we built OLL.E for. On Android, with notification access, it reads each Discord notification as it arrives and checks it against a sentence you typed, like "a buy alert in #signals from the mod" or "someone mentions my order". A Discord notification usually names the channel and who posted, so OLL.E can tell the mod's entry from the fifteenth "wen moon". When one matches, your phone rings with a call or an alarm, and you get a summary of the post. Everything else waits quietly in the Shortlist. It never sees your Discord account and needs no bot on anyone's server. It also doesn't reply on Discord for you.

It only sees what Discord sends to the phone, so keep the channel's notifications on or there is nothing to watch. On a very large server that means the mentions and role pings, which is usually what a signal post carries anyway. On iPhone it needs the PinG keyring to see Discord at all.

Trading from Telegram as well? The Telegram signals post covers that app's quirks, and stock and options alerts that call you covers broker and screener alerts.

On Android a Discord watch needs nothing beyond the app and notification access. On iPhone it needs the PinG keyring, a small Bluetooth device you buy on its own, because the phone won't let OLL.E see Discord's notifications otherwise. You can run it free on a couple of servers before deciding on Pro ($19.99/month).

Questions people ask

Why are my Discord notifications not working?

Usually Discord never sent the notification: the server or channel is muted or set to Nothing, your status is Do Not Disturb, or you are active on your computer, which makes Discord hold phone notifications. After that, check the phone's own notification settings for Discord. Very large servers may not push every message, only mentions.

How do I change the Discord notification sound?

On desktop or in the browser, open User Settings > Notifications and use the Sounds section to switch individual sounds on or off, or pick an Event Sound Pack. On a phone the sound is controlled by the phone, so look for Discord in the phone's own notification settings.

How do I get notified for one Discord channel only?

Set the server to Only @mentions in its Notification Settings, then click the bell on the channel you care about and set it to All Messages. On very large servers your phone may still get mentions only, so keep role mentions switched on for that server.

Can Discord call me when someone posts?

Discord can't, but OLL.E can. On Android it reads Discord's notifications and phones you or sounds an alarm only for the post that matches your sentence, such as a buy alert in #signals from the mod, then sends a summary. On iPhone it needs the PinG keyring, and the channel's notifications must stay on.
